1999

Arriving in the U.S. in 1997 with all his belongings in a cardboard box, Carlos Coto was eager to grow. He had come from Honduras and found a home with the local Italian tailors in Northern New Jersey. After a few years of honing the craft that he initially learned from his father, he acquired Summit Tailors at its first location, 12 Maple Street. In that humble shop, he expanded his business, perfecting his technique, and gradually put himself on the map.

Summit Tailors moved to its current home at 37 Maple Street. Carlos made the most of his lively basement unit, hosting thousands of fittings, creating all sorts of suits, jackets, and shirts, and making meaningful connections with neighbors all around town. It's here that Carlos and his tailors became an iconic fixture of downtown Summit.

Carlos' nephew, Josue, and his daughter, Emilia, have since learned his trade and joined him in building up what started as a dream nearly 30 years ago. Josue trained directly with a Savile Row tailor and Emilia specialized in technical design at Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. Carlos has also built up an exceptional team of tailors who strive to deliver the finest handiwork, marrying old world skills with 21st century sensibilities and convenience.
